Year 12 Work Experience

Picture

Introduction

We are excited to formally launch our Year 12 Work experience with you, our student and parent community.

Year 12 work experience is planned for the 26th June 2023.

We are hoping that this valuable experience will provide our students with a further exploration into the world of work through undertaking a work placement on site with an employer, carrying out tasks or duties in the role of an employee and learn valuable work skills such as punctuality, communication, commitment and teamwork.

Prior to work experience, students will receive the correct preparation regarding how to find their own placement, assistance with creating a CV and cover letter, how to stand out in any potential interview and guidance health and safety and work.

During the course of planning and approving work experience placements, we will follow all government guidelines and legal frameworks. As such, we will need to check that employers have up to date Employers Liability Insurance at the time of the placement, work with employers on how to help our students get the most from their experience and undertake health & safety appraisals where necessary to ensure the health, safety and welfare of students.
While on placement students will be monitored by a member of school staff so that they can check attendance and progress.

Overview of Year 12 Work Experience
The school will prepare the students before their work experience in the following areas:
  • Health and safety in the work place
  • Standard of behaviour expected
  • Safeguarding themselves
  • What to do if things go wrong
  • What to do if ill or unable to attend

IMPORTANT NEXT STEPS & DEADLINES
Contained on this page, we have enclosed a copy of our Self-Placement Form and a Guide to finding a Self-placement. We are hoping to have the fully forms completed forms sent back to us prior to the end of April. Any assistance or support you can provide in the process and working towards our deadlines would be gratefully received.

For further information, please do review this informative video (above)

Work experience can be quite a challenge and we hope that the school and our parental community can work together to ensure that it is a valuable and worthwhile experience!

DURING THE PLACEMENT
You can help by:
  • Checking that the placement is going well
  • Encouraging a mature response to any difficulties or challenges faced
  • Encouraging your child to persevere even if the placement is not what they expected
  • Letting the school know if there is a problem that requires our attention

We will help by:
  • Contacting students on placement throughout the week
  • Being available on our designated contact number throughout the whole week

AFTER THE PLACEMENT
Many young people find work experience is a key influence in developing their self-esteem and enjoy the time spent in an adult environment. Students will get a chance to discuss their experiences in sixth form but as a parent you can also talk over what your child has gained from the experience and highlight the importance of the experience in developing a CV or writing their Apprenticeship, further employment and/or UCAS application.
