Y12 Weizmann Institute SafecrackersDate: 28th March 2017
On Tuesday 28th March 2017 King David participated in the 22nd International Finals of the Shalheveth Freier Safe Cracking competition hosted by the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot. Participants designed and built a box of physics based problems which other teams had to attempt to solve in order to open the safe. In 2017, 198 teams entered the competition with 26 making the journey to the Weizmann Institute. Entrants came from Canada, USA, Panama, Angola, Moldova, Slovenia, UK, Romania and also Israel. The winners Slovenia were excellent as they cracked almost all the safes they attempted. UK based teams did extremely well with the King David High School safe being one of the more robust as it was only cracked once. All students had an outstanding time visiting a world class research institute and learning about the contributions made by the institute’s founder and first president of Israel Chaim Weizmann. Former King David High School teacher Ben Kayser met and inspired his old students as he is now working at the institute towards his PhD. The students also enjoyed a couple of outings, visiting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv-Yaffo, exploring markets and seeing some popular tourist spots. The trip was an excellent opportunity for the students to see real life science happening and to make new friends with other international students who shared similar interests.
