What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is additional government funding provided to schools to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils and help remove barriers to learning. At The King David High School, we are committed to ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to achieve their potential, regardless of their background or financial circumstances.

Pupil Premium funding supports this commitment by providing additional academic, pastoral and enrichment opportunities for pupils who may need extra support.

Free School Meals – Changes from September 2026

From September 2026, all children from households receiving Universal Credit are entitled to Free School Meals, regardless of household earnings.

There are now two categories of eligibility:

Targeted Free School Meals

For pupils whose families meet the existing income-based eligibility criteria, including households receiving Universal Credit with annual net earned income of £7,400 or less.

These pupils are entitled to free school meals and may also attract additional Pupil Premium funding.

Expanded Free School Meals

For pupils whose families receive Universal Credit but have earnings above the £7,400 threshold.

These pupils are entitled to free school meals but do not attract Pupil Premium funding through expanded eligibility alone.

Other qualifying benefits and circumstances may also provide entitlement to free school meals.

Ever 6 Pupil Premium

Pupils who have been eligible for Targeted Free School Meals at any point during the previous six years may continue to attract Pupil Premium funding, even if their family's circumstances change.

This means that a pupil may remain eligible for Pupil Premium support even if they no longer qualify for free school meals or now qualify under the Expanded Free School Meals category.

If you think that you should be entitled to Free School Meals under Ever 6 funding, please contact Mrs Rose in the school office on 0161 740 7248.

Apply for Free School Meals

We encourage all parents and carers receiving Universal Credit or other qualifying benefits to check their eligibility, even if they have not previously qualified.

All applications should be completed using our online eligibility checker: Apply for Free School Meals – LGfL Eligibility Checker

The checker is free, secure and provides an instant eligibility result to both yourself and the administration department at King David. It will identify whether your child qualifies for Targeted or Expanded Free School Meals. We will then be able to instantly action the result and ensure that your child recieves their Free School Meals quickly.

Even if your child does not intend to take a school meal, we encourage you to complete the eligibility check, as qualifying for Targeted Free School Meals may also help the school access additional funding to support pupils.

If you require assistance with your application, please contact the school office.

Other Pupil Premium Eligibility

Pupil Premium funding is also available for certain pupils who are not eligible through Free School Meals.

This includes:

  • Looked-after children: Children currently in the care of a local authority.

  • Previously looked-after children: Pupils who have left care through adoption, a special guardianship order or certain child arrangements orders.

  • Service children: Eligible children of Armed Forces personnel may attract separate Service Pupil Premium funding.

Parents and carers who believe their child may qualify under these categories are encouraged to contact the school office.

How We Use Pupil Premium Funding

At The King David High School, Pupil Premium funding is used to help remove barriers to learning and ensure disadvantaged pupils can participate fully in school life.

Depending on identified needs, support may include:

  • Academic support: Targeted interventions, additional teaching and revision resources.

  • Pastoral support: Supporting pupils' wellbeing, attendance and engagement in school.

  • Enrichment opportunities: Helping pupils access educational visits, extracurricular activities and wider learning experiences.

  • Practical assistance: Support with school-related costs, where appropriate.

Pupil Premium funding is allocated to the school rather than directly to individual pupils. Support is provided according to identified needs and the priorities outlined in our Pupil Premium Strategy.

Our Pupil Premium Strategy

We regularly review how Pupil Premium funding is used and evaluate its impact on pupils' progress, attainment and wider educational experiences.

Our Pupil Premium Strategy Statement outlines our priorities, planned expenditure and the outcomes achieved for disadvantaged pupils.
