Yesterday saw the culmination of the Yavneh girls Brachot campaign this term, in memory of Sarah Goldman. Each year group had to accumulate as many Brachot as possible. This was all recorded on a chart in the Yavneh hall. The girls have all been really enthusiastic and one could hear lots of Brachot bring recited as you passed their classrooms. The winning class was year Ten, who will be treated to a meal in a restaurant after Pesach.

The Likud party were firmly in the lead with Shas in second place. This was organised by Mrs.Hoffner with help from Year 10 who hosted the polling station and Year 8 who prepared the ballot cards. Mr Roth addressed students in year 9 about the important work of Keren Malki. Malki Roth was tragically murdered by a suicide bomber in 2001 aged just 15. During the Shiva the family discussed how they would memorialise her. Keren Malki the Malki Foundation provides material and financial help to families with special needs children. Their help is available to all citizens of the State of Israel in all areas of the country. Keren Malki is this year’s chosen charity. Students were invigorated after the talk and discussed ways that their groups could raise even more money to help the foundation with its vital work.
In preparation for Pesach, Yavneh Boys held a father son learning session. The morning began with Tephillah which was run by different boys. A tasty breakfast was served much to the delight of all. Soon after, fathers and sons sat together to study source material on the centrality of questions in Jewish tradition. Rabbi Rickman gave a summary talk which was followed by Rabbi Cohen. The morning concluded with a final message from Rabbi Rickman. Students reported that it was very special having time to learn Torah together with their fathers. Parents left uplifted and looking forward to further opportunities to sit and learn with their sons. Rabbi Rickman informed parents that the school will be providing thought provoking material to help with Seder night via the school Parsha Webpage. A weekly parasha (torah portion) sheet is now available for download. Written with the students in mind, it is ideal for discussion at home, across the Friday night dinner table and study. On Sunday 10th Feb, 5 of our Y12 Physicists together with Head of Physics, Mr.Curati, took part in the Weizman institute safe cracking competition.
Hosted once again by Dulwich college KD's safe did very well, only being cracked the once. The team consisting of Hinda Perez, Alex Harris, Zak Feingold, Ruben Burton and Olivia Zemmel enjoyed the day. With 24 other competing safes there was strong competition from independent and state schools. As well as meeting other young Physics students we also met up with one of our alumna Charlotte Zemmel who was working in her capacity as one of the expert judges. Year 13 Religious Studies students accompanied Rabbi Rickman to a Holocaust Memorial Day event at Home Cinema.
The national focus this year is the trauma of being "Torn from Home". Students watched cutting edge films depicting the horrors of leaving all that is familiar and comfortable. Holocaust survivor Danny Herman addressed the audience, sharing anecdotes of his own story during the war years. “Our students were a credit to the school. They took part in discussions about the films and engaged with themes in a very mature way , said Rabbi Rickman. This year we had a phenomenal 8 conditional offers for Oxbridge: 4 from Oxford, 4 from Cambridge, across a diverse range of subjects.
In addition, we have most of the 10 medical/dentistry offers in (just 2 pending). The students have been outstanding this year and we wish them all the success in the summer exams so that they can fulfill their offer requirements. JNF UK are pleased to confirm that King David High School, Manchester has been selected as one of the 18 Jewish schools across the country to receive a grant from JNF UK for their Israel education programme.
During the past two weeks, the U13 & U16 Table Tennis Singles Championships has taken place, our 13 students performed admirably representing the school impeccably.
At U16 Level, Charlotte Myer was the overall Runner up, assisting her GCSE Practical Table Tennis score. At U13 Level, Jay Saipe claimed a Bronze medal against a very strong field and Jodie Lee performed amazingly as a Y7 against several Y8 students to win the U13 Girls Championships claiming Gold. King David High School hosted an evening of commemoration of the Jewish NW men and women who served in WWI. This evening was attended by the Lord Mayor of Manchester and Bury and other local dignitaries. Dr.Hitching presented new insight to the experience for North West Jewish men and women and readings from Jewish trench diarists, letters, poetry and newspapers illustrated the extraordinary contribution made by national Jewry.
Charlie Silvert from Y12 opened the readings with a 1914 editorial from the Jewish Chronicle which urged men and women to volunteer for service as loyal Britons and Jews. For more information and involvement, please visit the We Were There Too website. Students from the Sixth Form entered the annual ‘Juvenes Translatores’ languages competition.
The prestigious ‘Juvenes Translatores’ contest was started in 2007 to find the best young translators in the Europe. With studies showing the ever-growing need for translation and translators across the continent, the competition aims to raise awareness of the importance of translation skills and the need to reassess translation — as a means of ‘mediating’ between languages — in the context of language learning. King David was one of a small number of UK schools selected to take part in the competition. The school would like to thank Jacob Rudolph, Ruben Burton, Theo Cosky, Jade Wagman, Amy Brown and Alicia Chapman for their enthusiasm, hard work and excellent translations. Put on by the History Department there was a showing on Monday and Tuesday of the extraordinary colourised presentation of the First World War. Employing state-of-the-art technology to transform audio and moving image archive footage more than a century old, Peter Jackson brings to life the people who can best tell the story of World War I: the men who were there. This film sets out to explore the day-to-day experience of its combatants. The showing was open to all Year 9-13 and all staff. The Isaac Physics vectors workshop is designed for high achieving students who are aiming for a mathematical, engineering or physical sciences degree. It was attended by students from KD as well as Oldham Hulme Grammar, Altrincham Girls Grammar and St Ambrose College.
The session was led by academic lead, Mr.Christo. Year 9 History students have produced a centenary wall display to commemorate service given by soldiers in the Great War from the local area. Students researched individuals alongside their classroom studies on Great War subjects including trenches, weapons of war, medicine, VCs (29 in the area), battlefields and local regiments. Each poppy has been dedicated to a local soldiers.
The poppies will form part of a display outside the main history classrooms. At the City Wide Badminton Team Championships our two Key Stage 4 teams and Key Stage 3 team performed to a high standard of play, Our Key Stage 3 team was though our only representative in the knock out phases having defeated Parrswood, Cedar Mount and Manchester Communication Academy in the group phase finishing top of Group A. This meant a semi-final against Burnage who were defeated 4 games to 1 meaning qualification to the final. In the final their opposition was Chorlton High School, the standard of play from all 4 students was incredibly high but they were defeated 3 games to 2 on the last leg of the final winning silver medals. Our Key Stage 3 team consisted of Ben Bentley, Ruben Baker, Josh Stonefield and Charlie Leventhall.
Rabbi Goodman, along with students in Year 9, announced and launched the school campus charity for this year, Keren Malki Foundation.
The Keren Malki Foundation is one of Israel’s leading medial support organisations helping families support children with disabilities at home rather than in hospitals. MMI is the preferred way that medical/dental schools gauge the ability of students to cope with the intensity of the course and have replaced traditional panel interviews. The ten stations included inter alia: numerical calculation; ethical dilemma; manual dexterity; graphical interpretation; and NHS awareness. Many thanks to Dr.Ellis, Dr.Dover and all staff who participated. Just before half term, the city of Manchester badminton doubles championships took place at Whalley Range. Our 4 teams performed admirably but sadly 3 were knocked out in the group stages. Our sole qualifiers to the knock out phase was our key stage 3 boys team of Ben Bentley and Ruben Baker.
In the semi finals they were drawn against Parrswood and successfully qualified for the Finals winning 15-11. This guaranteed the boys a medal but which colour? Their opponents were Manchester Grammar school. The boys were victorious winning 15-12 and are now City of Manchester Champions - a fantastic achievement for all their hard work at badminton club. Bobby Wagon, from Year 7 Yavneh Boys, cut his long hair to raise £2300 to support boys and girls with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. Bobby's own brother, Uzi was born with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). This is a rare genetic condition which means that he has benign growths on his organs. These growths cause other complications, so in addition, Uzi has Autism and Epilepsy. The Tuberous Sclerosis Association funds vital medical research, and during Uzi's lifetime there have already been significant breakthroughs with new medication and treatments. Bobby hopes that one day, they will succeed in finding a cure for TSC. To donate, please visit Bobby's JustGiving page. On Motzei Shabbat over Sukkot, Yavneh Boys launched their morning Chabura. The launch was attended by 25 boys who learned for an hour after a shiur from rabbi Schwartz. The chabura will run every morning in yavneh boys from 7 45 til 8 30 for year 11 and sixth form followed by breakfast after davening.
