As part of their Business
Studies GCSE unit on
"New Product Development",
the Year 10 and 11 Business
Studies class were treated
to a visit by a Sinclair C5
enthusiast, Lance Colwyn,
who brought with him a C5
that was launched onto the
market in January 1985. It
was the world's first
battery powered vehicle and
he also had the original
documents and newspaper
sales advert. The C5 became
an object of media and
popular ridicule during
1980s Britain and was a
commercial disaster,
selling only around 12,000
units when Sir Clive
Sinclair hoped to sell
250,000! The students got to
sit and ride in the vehicle.
They also discussed with
Mr.Colwyn, and their teacher
Miss.S.Airley the benefits
and drawbacks of the product
both in the 1980s and today.
