Sir
Richard Leese was welcomed to the
Sixth Form to discuss his role and
views as the Leader of Manchester
City Council. He fascinated students
with his description of the project
“Building Schools for the Future”
which involves King David and its
aim to refurbish nearly all
secondary schools in Manchester. Sir
Richard also spoke about the
economic cuts of 9% announced
yesterday but believes that skills
and knowledge will drive the economy
and continue to produce jobs in
Manchester. Sir Richard – who lives
in Crumpsall- described the
strengths of Manchester as a modern,
dynamic city with the most popular
universities in the country in terms
of applicants. Due to its
popularity, he explained that
Manchester University and
Metropolitan will not risk
bankruptcy, though will face a
reduced number of applicants who can
no longer afford to attend
university. He was questioned by
members of KD Sixth Form regarding
the congestion charge, the scrapping
of EMA payments, budget cuts and
public transport.
Sir
Richard Leese encouraged the
students to “work hard, develop a
broad range of interests and engage
in politics” so as to stand out
amongst competitors for University.
