On
Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd
February, the Year 13 A2 Biology
students visited the Nowgen Centre;
part of the National Institute for
Health Research and a leading centre
for genetics in healthcare. During
the action-packed day, they went on
a voyage of discovery, ably led by
PhD students from the University of
Manchester. Many interesting topics
of debate were touched upon, from
details of how Humans evolved from
chimpanzees, to why certain people
just hate Brussels sprouts. The
teaching was combined with getting a
hands-on experience in the labs,
giving the chance to use top of the
range equipment and carry out the
experiments rather than just talk
about them. By the end of the day,
they had managed to replicate their
DNA thousands of times and even find
out what their genotype was for a
specific characteristic. All-in-all,
it was an enthralling day for all -
including Dr. Hampson and Mrs.
Raczkowycz who deserve thanks for
giving up their time to organise the
trip and for accompanying students
on the trip on both days.
