Key Stage 3:
Overview of the Year 7 course:
In year 8 rather than working through separate tasks pupils are given a brief and they complete more project work based upon, “Developing Skills”. There’s a new exciting scheme of work for year 8 which is now about making cakes for the cafe culture and producing multi cultural, healthy food dishes including; chow mein, Indian savoury rice, Pasta ragu.
Overview of the Year 9 course:
In year 9 pupils complete two different projects to try and gain more in depth knowledge of; the Food Technology course, increase practical skills and also work towards GCSE standard.
Key Stage 4:
Food Technology is an option for the whole school. It is taught in mixed ability groups. Each class has around 5 lessons a week including ‘double’ and ‘single’ lessons. All pupils have access to computers and colour printers in the Food Technology Department.
GCSE Course Overview:
In year 10 pupils work through all of the different aspects of Food Technology including; learning about different ingredients, functions of ingredients, the different methods of pastry and cake making, ready made products and Preservation techniques. All of the topics studied in Year 10 are topics that could arise in the exam, (which pupils sit at the end of Year 11). Whilst studying the different topics, pupils also complete a wide range of practicals to; enhance their learning as well as helping them to gain more skills and confidence in practical tasks. At the end of Year 10 pupils start their coursework.
The GCSE Food Technology exam is worth 40% and pupils sit this exam at the end of Year 11.
Key Stage 5 Overview:
The subject is offered to all pupils and the groups are of mixed ability and genders. The course lasts for two years in total. In year 12 there are 2 modules, a portfolio (2 pieces of coursework) and an exam. In Year 13 it is similar where there a 2 modules again, with a portfolio and exam.
