Maths and
Computing:
SPECIALIST
STATUS
King David High School
is a Maths & Computing Specialist Status School. This means that the
quality of Mathematics and Computing is of a high and continually
improving standard and that the school works with other bodies to help
raise standards elsewhere.
Work with other
schools
Masterclasses have
been run from the High School for primary school children in Years 5 and
6, for the past three years. Pupils have attended from Brodetsky Jewish
Primary School (Leeds), Broughton Jewish Primary School, Bury &
Whitefield Jewish Primary School, King David Junior School and North
Cheshire Jewish Primary School. The days events have been incredibly
enjoyable, allowing pupils to learn from activities that they would not
normally do (typically working at level 4) and to experience a secondary
school environment, sometimes for the first time.
2008 pupils
experienced a Space Day, with a series of events including:
-
Developing a space game using specialist software.
-
Controlling the build and flight process of a rocket from Central
Command, using an in-house designed application.
-
Developing a web-based space communication system.
-
Letting
their imaginations run wild with computer art, designing possible
alien life-forms.
2009 as the space
game proved so successful, pupils were offered the opportunity of
getting to grips with further programming in a Computer Games day.
Specialist software was employed to allow pupils to:
-
Explore
the gaming concepts
-
Understand the role of sequencing and iteration
-
Develop
their own maze game
2010 a hugely
enjoyable event, based on the theme of Computers and the Movies. Pupils
were given a unique experience, using specialist software, which allowed
them to:
-
Understand the concept and purpose of movie trailers
-
Investigate the process of movie trailer development, employing
industry-standard conventions
-
Develop
their own 30 second trailer, incorporating animation and sound
Each year, our partner
school, St Monicas Roman Catholic High School, Prestwich, has been
invited to send Year 10 pupils to attend taster sessions in A level
ICT and A level Computing.
Community work
King David High School
has a number of ties with the Federation of Jewish Services (formally
the Fed) and is in the process of setting up weekly sessions with the
residents of Heathlands Village. |
