King David High School History Dept Tour, Feb 2009    .

Once again this year the History Department of King David High School took a group of A2 students to Berlin in order to further their knowledge of Nazi era Germany in preparation for their June exam. Building on last April’s successes, and expanding the programme to include more seasonal activities, Mr Watson and Mrs Hughes travelled with 11 intrepid explorers to stay at the Baxpax in downtown Mitte during coldest February.

Amongst other excursions on the four day tour the group visited ‘The Topography of Terror Exhibit’ on the site of the former SS/Gestapo Headquarters; took a tour of The Wannsee Conference Centre Museum; travelled to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. They also climbed the Dome of the Reichstag after walking through Tiergarten to the Brandenburg Gate. In order that students were able to involve themselves in the resurgent Jewish cultural life in Berlin, they took in the Jewish Museum, the (not so) New Synagogue and also several restaurants and cultural centres.

As well as all the history and study, there was ample opportunity for relaxation given the splendid facilities at the Baxpax. We also took in some Ice Skating on what seemed to be the German speed-skating training circuit. Mr Watson and David Matzliach were especially impressive in their ‘Bambi on Ice’ performances. Next year we look forward to expanding the trip further to suit the new exam specification which will lead us to more Imperial and Weimar related terrain. All returned tired, but safe and sound. Well done!!

The team was as follows:

  1. Harry Giladi – solid throughout; reliable but not dull with it

  2. David Matzliach – diligent and well able to defend himself despite injury

  3. Bradley Franks – late to catch up but communicated with style

  4. Michael Cass – good transport through midfield. Most impressed.

  5. Elora Esterkin – Stylish and hardworking; many valid questions posed

  6. Robert Semp – Held his own whilst all around slowing down

  7. Esther Stonefield – enjoyed it despite major reservations; a content performance

  8. Hannah Hyman – worked hard; maintained high standards throughout

  9. Natasha Zoltie – interested, involved, looked after Cass

  10. Jamie Lewis – treated Mrs Hughes like his Mum. Which is nice.

  11. Samuel Rosenberg – just like Jamie, but chose Harry instead. Good move

Subs

Mrs Hughes – language skills; contracts; excellent.

13.  Mr Watson – history; ice dancing; map reading; also v good
