  English Literature GCSE Course Summary

  EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT 35% (2 hrs) Taken in the June of year 10
  Unit 1: Prose and poetry
  Section A 21%
  Students study different cultures prose such as Of Mice and Men (Steinbeck) or To Kill a Mockingbird (Lee)
   
  Section B 14%
  Unseen poetry comparison: students write a comparative essay in response to two unseen poems.
   
  EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT 40% (2 hrs) Taken in the June of year 11
  Unit 2: Drama and prose
  Section A
 

Students study a drama text such as Othello (Shakespeare);  Much Ado About Nothing (Shakespeare); An Inspector Calls (Priestley);  Hobson’s Choice (Brighouse); Blood Brothers (Russell) or  A View from the Bridge (Miller)

   
  Section B
  Students study a novel such as Silas Marner (Eliot); Pride and Prejudice (Austen); or Lord of the Flies (Golding).
   
  CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT (LINKED TEXTS) 25%
 

Unit 3: Poetry and drama (literary heritage)

  Students study a Shakespeare play and at least 1 one poem to produce a comparative essay.
