New York Trip 2013

King David High School Sixth Form Business and Economics Students had the amazing opportunity to visit businesses in New York’s big apple!

Students visited several businesses to learn about the global financial crisis and the current economic climate and its impact upon international and domestic markets.
Besides visiting tourist sites students met local businesses including JnR electronics department store led by entrepreneur and manager Abe brown to learn about fierce online competition business strategies and 911 and hurricane impacts upon his business, Streits Matzo factory led by owner Aran Streits to learn about marketing and production techniques, the JC Penney team briefing programme, Wall St Museum of history and finance to compare the great depression to the current global crisis. Students also paid their respects to 911 victims with an emotional  tour of 911 memorial at ground zero.

Students raised money from a variety of charity initiatives to fund their trip including setting up small enterprises led by student Chantelle Isaacs selling candy floss! Mr Hodgson said “Students developed a deeper understanding of external influences upon businesses, relevant business strategies with the odd shopping experience and kosher delight thrown in!”.

Ex-King David High School business student Daniel Radnor who left two years ago with excellent grades in A-level in business studies returned to meet current students on how to start and run a business. His  website business loveitbookit.com trades in cruises for his customers and students interviewed Dan about the reasons why he started and the issues he has faced. Mr Hodgson (Head of Business) said “Daniel is a real inspiration for our current students showing them what they can achieve when they truly apply themselves in the subject and want to start up their own businesses in years to come’ .

Ex-student turned local entrepreneur Serge Fagelman nipped into visit Year 11 and 12 Business Students to meet with them and discuss starting up your own business and the skills required of an entrepreneur. Serge who is now involved with three businesses from online pharmaceuticals to media marketing said that "ambition, ambition, ambition" was the driving force behind his success. Serge stated that he has always had a desire to make money and university was not to his taste plus he didn’t want to be saddled with huge debt when he could be making money now without the debt. Mr Hodgson said that "Serge was always very driven in business from a young age and he is such a positive people person. He was able to inspire our business students and explore the skills you need to have to run your own company. It was a pleasure seeing another ex-KD student being so successful".
